Early Canterbury motorbike racer Ernie Hinds sits astride his 1000-cc two-pistoned Indian racing motorcycle, a 1916 model. A few years earlier, on 21 December 1914, Hinds had raced another Indian motorbike against W. B. Scott in his Vauxhall racing car on New Brighton beach, over 2, 6 and 10 miles. Watched by thousands, Hinds won the 2-mile (3.2-kilometre) heat. Although the motorcycle was faster, the car had better brakes and cornering ability. Over the longer distances, going back and forth on the course, it prevailed. Scott won the prize of £100 ($13,717 in 2009 terms).
