Strikers outside Alliance Textiles mill

Strikers outside Alliance Textiles mill

Marching through the rainy streets of Milton, Otago, in October 1991, these textile mill workers have just gone on strike. Some continued picketing their employer for more than eight years. A total of 51 workers at the Alliance Textiles mill in Milton were locked out by their employer in 1991 for refusing to sign a new employment contract. This was the first major dispute since the Employment Contracts Act was introduced earlier that year.
