Kōrero: Trout and salmon

Atlantic salmon

Atlantic salmon

Huge efforts were made to acclimatise this species for fishing. The only successful habitat was in the Waiau River, which drains Lake Manapōuri. But it seems doubtful that the population there was ever seagoing. The species is considered to be close to extinction in New Zealand, with remnant wild stocks confined to lakes in the upper Waiau catchment in Southland. This fish was photographed at a hatchery in Wānaka in 1995.
