The New Zealand Game Bird Habitat Trust supports wildlife habitat conservation, for hunting purposes but also for wider ecological benefits. Trust consultant Karen Walshe (left) and Fish and Game field officer Vaughan Lynn check out the Para wetland near Koromiko, which is rated the best freshwater wetland in New Zealand. Fish and Game has purchased areas of the wetland in order to clear willow and plant native species. As well as creating a larger habitat for game birds such as ducks, the restoration project aims to provide a breeding ground for other waterfowl, including the endangered Australasian bittern. The ultimate goal is to encourage both hunters and the public to enjoy and respect the area.
