Guppies need warm water and are popular aquarium fish. In New Zealand they have been present for many years in geothermal waters near Reporoa, in the central North Island. They may have been introduced as early as the 1920s. Guppies closely resemble gambusia and are small – females grow to 6 centimetres and males to 3 centimetres.
