Overrun by rabbits

Rabbit populations can become very dense in suitable conditions. This 1997 photograph of rabbits near Wānaka, Central Otago, gives some idea of the numbers that can build up. The vegetation in the foreground has been completely stripped, exposing the soil to erosion. Even if the rabbits were eradicated, this land would be slow to recover.
