First plague of rabbits

First plague of rabbits

This map shows the known sites in the South Island where rabbits were liberated, and the timing of their spread inland in the first plague of rabbits, from the early 1870s. Most of central Canterbury was not affected by this first plague – but rabbits later spread across the entire eastern side of the country.
