The Pembroke Wilderness Area covers 18,000 hectares in Fiordland National Park, adjacent to Milford Sound. This view from Mt Pembroke shows part of the area, with Milford Sound in the middle distance. Wilderness areas are preserved in a pristine state: there are no huts or tracks, and vehicles and aircraft are banned. Developments such as skifields or mining are also prohibited. The National Parks Act 1952 made provision for wilderness areas, but most exist outside national parks.
