This weka is about to be placed in a predator-proof enclosure in the Whirinaki Sanctuary, before being released into the Whirinaki Forest to fend for itself. The sanctuary was created in the 1980s to protect trees from logging. In the 2000s a programme to reintroduce the endangered North Island weka received strong support from the local Ngāti Whare tribe.
