Southern rātā is one of New Zealand’s hardiest trees. In the North Island it is found only in mountainous areas, where it prefers exposed sites or infertile soils. In the South Island it is wide-ranging, and grows in high-altitude beech forest, scrublands with infertile soils, and conifer–broadleaf forest. It forms New Zealand’s southernmost forests, on the subantarctic Auckland Islands.
