Rebuilding Wellington

The growth of government, finance and trade increased land values in Wellington’s business district and encouraged rebuilding. Small wooden buildings began to be replaced by large masonry structures such as the Kempthorne Prosser building on Lambton Quay, photographed in the late 1880s.
