
The almost flat land in much of central Otago is the remains of an ancient peneplain – the final stage of erosion, when mountains have been reduced to a plain near to sea level. Charles Cotton studied at Otago University, and his knowledge of the Otago peneplain influenced his ideas on landscape evolution.
