Kōrero: Walking tracks

In Wellington there was a growing interest in tramping in the Tararuas. The Tararua Tramping Club was set up in 1919, and huts were soon built. This group has stopped on the Waiopehu Track on the opening day of the Waiopehu Hut, 4 March 1928. Ōtaki MP Willie Field (second from left) pioneered the southern crossing over Mt Hector and was the first president of the Tararua Tramping Club. He co-founded the club with Wellington businessman Fred Vosseler (third from right).
