The quarries provided bluestone metal, and stone for walls and kerb edging. Dick Lavas, from the Adriatic island of Korčula, had dug gum and worked on railway construction before he started quarrying in the early 1920s. By the late 1920s stonemasons came directly to Mt Wellington from Korčula to work on various Dalmatian-run quarries. The wives of these men followed their husbands in the 1930s.
