Kōwhai specimen

Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander collected this specimen of kōwhai (Sophora tetraptera) in northern New Zealand in 1769. Seeds collected at this time were taken back to England and grown, and within a few years the plants were on display in several English botanic gardens. The British Natural History Museum acquired specimens collected by Banks and Solander in 1828. A collection of duplicates was later returned to New Zealand, and the sheets are held in different herbaria.
