Exotic forest

Exotic forest

This pine forest is in Wairarapa’s eastern uplands. The region’s first exotic forest was planted in the 1940s to stabilise hill slopes and provide building timber. Plantings increased during the 1990s when business started investing in the sector. In the 2000s, prices have fallen, as has the number of new plantations.
