Stuffed huia

Stuffed huia

These two huia, the last found in Wairarapa, are displayed in the Dannevirke Gallery of History. Both Māori and Europeans prized the birds for their feathers, and by the early 1900s they had been hunted to extinction. In 2023, a pair of stuffed huia sold at auction in Britain for $466,000. The bottles are from the Huia Aerated Water Company in Dannevirke, which made soft drinks and cordials.
