Two trampers walk along the ridgeline of the Tararua Range, from Jumbo peak towards Three Kings and Girdlestone. The range is part of the North Island main range. It was formed by the collision of the Pacific and Australian plates, which tilted blocks of greywacke and argillite rock upward. Weathering has subsequently created deep gorges and valleys.
