Sir Charles Fleming stands at the Waikanae estuary, north of Wellington. A keen observer of birds, he campaigned for the conservation of this wetland, important for the 27 bird species that breed there, and for migratory birds. He helped set up the Waikanae Estuary Scientific Reserve in 1987. This is bordered by a marine reserve, which in turn borders Kāpiti Island Nature Reserve, forming a habitat for birds and the marine life they depend on.
