Kōrero: Glaciers and glaciation

Many of the valleys in South Westland were filled by glaciers during cold periods over the last million years. These moraine ridges, on the northern side of the Cascade valley, formed at the edges of a glacier. At present a river (top left) meanders along a broad swampy valley flood plain, formed after the glacier melted about 12,000 years ago.
