This satellite photograph of the Taranaki region clearly shows Mt Taranaki surrounded by its circle of dark green forest. The Egmont National Park boundary is visible as the circle around the mountain. Smaller patches of bush also show up as dark green against the light green pasture lands. Most of New Zealand’s lowland forests have been cleared for agriculture, leaving small fragmented pockets of native forest. These typically do not support as many native species as large forest areas such as Egmont National Park.
