Kākāriki are prized cage-birds overseas and have been bred by bird fanciers for many years. This colour mutant of the red-crowned kākāriki (Cyanoramphus auriceps), with its patches of yellow feathers, was bred in Belgium. While coloured forms of kākāriki are popular with overseas breeders, none are present in the captive population in New Zealand.
