E toru ngā rā e kōkiri ana ngā hōia a te kāwanatanga i te pā o Ōrākau; kua pau te kai, te wai, te paura a ngā kaiwawao Māori. I te rā tuatoru, ka rere ngā Māori kia puta ki tērā taha o te awa o Pūniu. Hāunga, i te wā e mau tonu ana rātou i Ōrākau, ka tono ngā hōia kia tuku rātou ki raro. Ka whakautua tērā tono ki te kōrero, ‘Ka whawhai tonu mātou ake ake!’
