Tribal groups in Taranaki

Ngāti Tama is based along the northern Taranaki coast, and Ngāti Mutunga around Urenui. The inland Waitara River valley is the traditional home of Ngāti Maru, while Te Āti Awa is found along the coast between Waitara and Ōakura. Taranaki occupies the western slopes of the mountain, and Ngā Ruahine Rangi the southern slopes. Along the plain, continuing south-east towards Whanganui, are the lands of Ngāti Ruanui and Ngā Rauru.
