Much of the shipping trade along the East Coast involved goods being transferred to smaller boats to get it on or offshore, but some of the settlements invested in wharfs or wharf improvements in the early 20th century. By the 1960s improved road transport had put an end to coastal shipping, but the wharfs at Hicks Bay, Tolaga Bay and Tokomaru Bay were still in existence in 2011, used for fishing and visited by tourists.
