Marlborough’s vegetation is markedly different on either side of the Wairau River. The northern zone consists of native forest, plantation forest and pasture, most of which is cleared forest and some of which is reverting to bush. South of the Wairau, away from the relatively small and intensively cultivated alluvial plains, tussock and grassland are the main vegetation cover.
