Art deco is used as a catch-all phrase to describe Napier’s buildings erected immediately before and after the 1931 earthquake. True art deco buildings are characterised by decorative motifs like zig-zags, sunbursts, fountains and plants. This style is exemplified by Kidson’s Building in Emerson Street, Napier, built in 1932.
