Another sign of urban New Zealanders’ willingness to make fun of rural New Zealand came with Murray Ball’s cartoon strip, Footrot flats. The cartoons featured a dog (named ‘Dog’), and a farmer, Wal, who dressed like Fred Dagg in a black singlet and gumboots. Murray Ball, like John Clarke, was from Manawatū.
