Between 1864 and 1866, and again in 1868–69, conflict between groups of Māori, and between Māori and British or colonial forces, occurred both north-west and upriver of Whanganui town. The fighting was part of the wider disaffection of many central North Island Māori – particularly supporters of the Pai Mārire faith – with Crown and settler ambitions. Local Māori who considered Whanganui town to be under their mana (authority) helped protect it from attack.
