Auckland’s vegetation has been transformed by human impact. The built-up urban area is the most extensive in New Zealand. It is surrounded for the most part by pastures of introduced grasses and cropland. Only in the Hūnua and Waitākere ranges and on some of the islands of the Hauraki Gulf is vegetation relatively unmodified.
