By 2038 the New Zealand population is expected to show considerably more ethnic diversity. The projections depend on predictions about patterns of immigration and emigration, but since Māori and Pacific people have higher birth rates than Pākehā, and there has been a strong flow of immigrants from Asia since the 1990s, there is little doubt that the European component of the population will be proportionally lower than in 2013.
Note: The graph uses the estimated resident population of each ethnic group at 30 June 2013 as a base. People who identify with more than one ethnicity have been included in each ethnic population.
