This graph shows the rate of abortion per 1,000 women aged between 15 and 44, and the proportion of known pregnancies (live births, stillbirths and induced abortions) that end in abortion. The period covered begins in 1979. One of the Abortion Supervisory Committee's responsibilities was reporting on rates of abortion. In the 1980s the rate per 1,000 women grew from 8.5 to 12.9 but remained low in comparison with other English-speaking developed countries. In the early 2000s the rate reached 21 per 1,000, was among the highest. It dropped into the mid-range in the 2010s.
