The moa and the lion

The moa and the lion

This cartoon by Trevor Lloyd, which appeared on a postcard, was widely reproduced as an expression of New Zealand’s pride in the All Blacks’ achievement during the 1905–6 tour. The phenomenal record of points scored was marred only by the team’s sole defeat, a 3–0 loss to Wales. The points do not include their other games outside the United Kingdom (which they also won) – one against France and two against British Columbia. One reason for the one-sided victories in England was that many of the best English players had seceded from the game to join the professional Northern League.
