Southland farmer Derek Turnbull set his first record in world masters competitions in 1977, aged 51. He went on to set 25 age-group world records and win 28 World Masters Games gold medals. Known as 'the fastest old man in the world', Turnbull set age-group records in the 800, 1,500, 5,000 and 10,000 metres, the cross country and the marathon. He ran competitively right up to his death in November 2006, just before his 80th birthday.
