Vaccination notice and certificate, 1866

Vaccination of children was compulsory from 1864 to 1920 (apart from a brief spell in 1872), though from 1900 parents who strongly objected to vaccination could get an exemption. The top image is a notice sent to the parents of baby William Matthew Tapp in June 1866 informing them that William had to be vaccinated within six months of his birth or they could be fined 40 shillings ($195 in 2010 terms). The image below is a certificate confirming William was vaccinated in September 1866. Scroll down to see both images.
