Kōrero: The voyage out

By 1910, on the large steamships which had taken the place of sailing ships, passengers were no longer expected to cook their own food and eat it on their bunks. Instead meals were served to them in well-appointed dining rooms, like this one on a New Zealand Shipping Company vessel just before the First World War.
