Kōrero: City styles

Group Show catalogue, 1953

Group Show catalogue, 1953

Because of their size and the diversity of residents, cities accommodate a wide range of cultural and social institutions. The Group was an art association started by graduates of the Canterbury School of Arts in Christchurch in 1927. It comprised younger artists whose work was not favoured by older, more conservative arts associations. The Group flourished and over its 50-year life span was associated with some of New Zealand’s best-known artists, including Rita Angus, Colin McCahon and Toss Woollaston.
