The scarecrow, made in 1982 by director Sam Pillsbury, was based on a novel of the same name by Hāwera writer Ronald Hugh Morrieson. The movie was part of the wave of New Zealand cinema that followed the setting up of the New Zealand Film Commission in 1978.
