Kōrero: City parks and green spaces

The Mona Vale homestead and park in Fendalton, Christchurch, was owned, gardened and landscaped by a series of different families from the late 19th century. By the 1960s this type of property was rare because it was expensive to maintain and run. A proposal was made to subdivide the land and demolish the grand house. In response, a campaign to save Mona Vale was launched by the Christchurch Civic Trust, and by late 1967 enough funds had been raised to purchase the property. It became a public park in 1968.
