During the 1990s and early 2000s Wairarapa experienced a number of child murders. In 2002, a Violence Free Wairarapa campaign began, with the twin aims of improving co-ordination between social agencies and working with at-risk families to reduce violence. The campaign’s symbol was a white ribbon. In the early 2010s the number of family violence incidents reported in Wairarapa fell, contrary to the national trend.
