On 4 September 2010 the first of a long series of severe earthquakes struck the Christchurch region. That day Te Ara published a Signposts blog post about the event and pointing to relevant background information on the site. Much of the post had been prepared earlier, in anticipation of the possibility of a severe quake. The piece attracted a number of comments, including one from Christchurch-based Rosemary du Plessis, a Canterbury University sociologist and theme editor of Te Ara's Social Connections theme. Du Plessis continued to keep Te Ara staff informed about the Christchurch earthquakes, sometimes while sheltering under her desk at the university.
