George Leitch's 'Maoriland' melodrama The land of the moa, written in the early 1890s, became the most widely performed New Zealand play of its time. It was designed around spectacular scenery and special effects, including a 3D representation of the Pink Terraces and a recreation of the Tarawera eruption that sometimes threatened to set fire to the theatre. The production, with 10 tonnes of scenery, toured New Zealand extensively and also played in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne.
