In February 1913 the two main branches of New Zealand Methodism – the Wesleyan Methodist Church and the Primitive Methodist Church – united into a single church. The Wesleyans began mission work in New Zealand in 1823, and the Primitive Methodists in 1884. This 1 February 1913 article from Wellington newspaper the Evening Post, says the proposal to unite created difficulties, but these were faced in a 'frank, manly, but brotherly way'.
