Many seabirds spot fish from the air and dive for them. This diagram illustrates the maximum dive depths of four species, along with the usual depths that longline fishing vessels drag their lines of baited hooks. It is clear that all can dive beyond the depths of these baits, which is why so many birds are caught and drowned.
