Governors and governors-general

From the 1860s to around 1890 most of New Zealand's governors were professional administrators. From the 1890s they were minor aristocrats, and after the First World War they often had a military connection. Since 1972 governors-general have been New Zealand residents, although the post remains theoretically available to members of the royal family.
