While exploring remote parts of the Tararua Range, Leslie Adkin found evidence of glaciation in some of the highest peaks. This diagram, from a paper he published in 1911, illustrates evidence that features near Arete Peak were created by glaciers. It was a remarkable feat of deduction for a young, self-taught natural scientist.
One effect of Adkin’s work was to cast doubts on James Park’s theory that there had once been an ice sheet over much of New Zealand. Adkin showed that glaciation in the Tararua Range was far less extensive than Park had predicted.
