Kōrero: Epidemics

Swine flew

A cartoon of a pig with wings flying over a map of New Zealand, titled ‘Swine Flew’.

The influenza A (H1N1) ‘swine flu’ pandemic generated more than 3,000 cases and caused 20 deaths in New Zealand in 2009. It was not nearly as bad as health officials had feared, and widespread media publicity had suggested, leading some people to question the judgement of officials in New Zealand and overseas. This 2009 cartoon plays on this criticism – a flying pig symbolises something that is just not going to happen in the real world.
