Isabella Aylmer's Distant homes, or the Graham family in New Zealand (1862) follows the fortunes of a pioneer family as they establish new lives in New Zealand after suffering economic misfortune back home in England. The Grahams land in Nelson, and Mrs Graham and the girls travel by sea to Canterbury, while Mr Graham and 14-year-old Tom venture overland with Māori guides. They spend a night at a pā, where Tom learns about tapu (religious restrictions) after noticing the chief did not feed himself. After regretfully declining the chief's offer of further hospitality, the party leaves the pā early the next day.
