
Before the establishment of a national state education system, there was a range of schools, including private (fee-paying) schools and church schools. They were not evenly spread across the country, and the types of subjects they taught varied. The Rangiora Church School in Canterbury, not surprisingly, emphasised religious topics. In 1860 pupil Charlotte Merton drew this map of the holy land.
