'The legend of the voyage to New Zealand'

Kennett Watkins' 1912 oil painting helped to romanticise the idea that a 'Great Fleet' had brought Māori to New Zealand. Such images bolstered an understanding that Māori were fine navigators who shared their superior nautical skills with their British kin.
